I love music, but I'd still definitely classify myself as a "sports guy."


And like every other sports guy, I'm a sucker for a good sports documentary. In 2009, ESPN came out with a sports documentary series called, 30 for 30, which was to celebrate 30 great sports stories in the 30 years of ESPN's existence. To say they did a good job would be quite the understatement. 

Well, the 30 for 30 series is back, and this time they're also releasing "30 for 30 Shorts" to further excite sports fans. On Wednesday, the second instalment of the shorts was released, showcasing the one and only Arnold Schwarzenegger. I must admit, I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first video of the series, but I enjoyed it nevertheless. I hope you do too.

Time Off

It's been over a week since the first semester of my Creative Communications journey has ended, and things have been surprisingly lively in my life since then. So that being said, here are a few thoughts from my past week.


  • The best thing I did this week, and actually all of this year, was go to Vancouver to see hip-hop heavyweights Jay-Z and Kanye West, otherwise known as The Throne at Rogers Arena. It was the single greatest concert experience I think I will ever have. The nearly three hour long show didn't have any opening acts, it was just Ye' and Jay rolling out their extensive library of collaborative and solo hits, keeping the sold out crowd on their feet the entire time. Some highlights were the performances of Power, All of the Lights, 99 Problems, and N***as in Paris, which was performed five times in a row for an unforgettable encore. Another highlight was the set, which consisted of two massive high definition screens, extravagant lighting and pyro, and two hydraulic cube stages that slowly raised the hip-hop legends 25 feet into the air as they performed (the cubes were also video screens). In retrospect I probably should have done a separate post on this experience, but I'm just going to move on.

  • Vancouver is a beautiful city. I really do like it there. But I really couldn't handle knowing that a high majority of the people around me were Vancouver Canucks fans. I truly despise that team, and you will surely hear me complain about them on this blog come playoff time. 
                            

  • I went to the Jets vs Capitals game last week, and got to witness it from front row seats behind the net. It was a dream come true. Ovechkin was two feet away from me and even with the glass separating us I still felt star struck. 

  • The guy behind me at the hockey game was on a nickname basis with the entire Jets team. Throughout the game he hollered, "Lets go Kaner! Here we go Glassy! Skate Welly! Com'n Wheels!" Oddly enough he kept it formal with one Jets forward when he simply yelled, "Good job, Stapleton."

  • The NBA is almost back, and I have a few things to say about that. The LA Clippers are going to be the most exciting team in the NBA. The Washington Wizards new jerseys are the best in the league. My New York Knicks will be a powerhouse this season with the additions of Tyson Chandler and Baron Davis, which excites me. My Toronto Raptors are going to be terrible, which depresses me. With the excitement of free agency, amnesty clause, and players moving from team to team, we're all starting to forget about the lockout. As grim as it looked a couple months ago, I don't think the NBA is going to be losing any momentum from 2011's incredibly exciting post-season. 
                  
  • Books on Amazon are significantly cheaper than Chapters. 

  • There is a concussion epidemic in the NHL, and some could argue professional sports in general. I don't know how they fix this without any good luck, but Ken Dryden has some good perspective on Grantland.

  • Even if the Packers didn't lose, and had an undefeated season, Tim Tebow would still be the biggest story of the NFL season. It doesn't make sense how he manages to win games the way he does.

  • My favorite sports broadcasters Sid Seixeiro and Tim Micallef are back on the radio, this time with Sportsnet on The Fan 590. Unlike their previous gig at The Score, they are now censored by public radio. But even without Sid's cuss filled rants, and their usual uncensored content, they still know their sports, and it's great to hear them on the air again. 

Time off has been great for me so far. And with Christmas just days away, it seems like it's going to stay that way. So until I get back to the daily grind, I'm going to continue to enjoy myself, and I hope you all do as well.
